What "ID verified" means on Among Our People
What the badge means
A member with the ID-verified badge has passed an identity check: a photo of an official ID document, matched to a live selfie. That confirms they're a real person and the person in their profile. Paying doesn't buy the badge. It's only given when the check is passed.
Who carries out the check
The check is run by Stripe Identity, part of Stripe, the payments company. Among Our People keeps a record that the check was done. We don't keep a copy of your ID document or your legal name.
What it doesn't tell you
The badge doesn't show whether someone has the right to rent in the UK, whether they can afford the rent, whether they own or are allowed to let a property, or whether they'd be easy to live with. So it's a good place to start, not a reason to skip the usual checks. Our guides on choosing a lodger and spotting a rental scam cover those.
References are separate
Applicants can also add references to a room application, such as a letter from a previous landlord, or proof of income or a guarantor. Someone letting a room can make references a requirement. References are provided by the applicant, so it's still worth following them up yourself.
Not every member is verified
Verification is optional, so plenty of genuine members won't have the badge. Look for it, but don't rule people out just because it's missing.✦
