Among Our People

LGBTQ+ flatshares across the UK — from Among Our People

About our guides

Who writes them

The guides on this site are written by the team behind Among Our People, a platform for LGBTQ+ people looking for housing, travel and each other. It was founded by Eric Crespin. We write for people sharing a home in the UK, especially LGBTQ+ renters and the people letting rooms to them, because most renting advice doesn't think about who you'll be living with.

How we check them

Every figure, date and legal point is checked against a primary source before a guide goes live: gov.uk, HMRC, Shelter, Citizens Advice, the deposit protection schemes, or the organisation that published the figure. The sources are linked at the foot of each guide, and inside the text where a fact appears. Each guide is read and approved by a named person before it's published. Where a guide covers the law, it says which country it applies to. Most cover England, and the rules in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are different.

Keeping them up to date

Renting law in England changed a lot in 2026, so we review the guides regularly. Each one shows when it was last reviewed. When a law, a price cap or an average rent changes, we update the guide rather than leave an old figure standing.

What they aren't

They're general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. They haven't yet been reviewed by a solicitor or an accountant. For your own situation, Shelter, Citizens Advice and, for LGBTQ+ people, Stonewall Housing all give free advice.
